Questions About Rats & Mice

Everything you need to know about Rats & Mice can be answered below. If you require any additional information not listed below, please feel free to Contact the Pros at Pro Pest - Call 416-487-4179.

How Do I Recognize A Mouse Or A Rat?

A mouse is a dusky gray in colour and it measures from 10 to 15 cm (4" to 6") overall, with large ears and a long tail. A rat usually is a dull brown colour and measures between 32 cm and 43 cm (12-1/2" to 17") from nose to tail. It has small, close-set ears, a blunt muzzle, and very sharp teeth.

How Can I Tell If I Have An Infestation Of Mice Or Rats?

Usually you will see their droppings near available food areas, are the most common indication. Gnawed holes in bags and boxes containing food or garbage are also signs of mouse activity. The same goes for rats but also you may see rub marks, tracks, burrows, nests, and damage to stored products may show the extent of the infestation.

What Can I Do To Prevent An Infestation Of Mice Or Rats?

Both of these pests will invade almost any home or business, however it is the presence of unsanitary conditions that encourages their activity. All goods must be stored in properly sealed jars or tins and waste should be prevented from accumulating, or kept in containers with tight-fitting lids. Seal all openings to the outside, including wood around doors and windows; repair masonry and seal openings for utility lines, conduits, and drains is a good start.

When Are Mice And Rats Most Common?

These pests are year-round. Under certain conditions, they can survive outdoors during the winter, however activity and indoor migration increases as weather gets cooler and outdoor food and water sources decrease.

Do Mice Or Rats Cause Damage?

Yes. They both cause extensive damage to houses, granaries, restaurants, bakeries and any place food is handled or stored. They will gnaw through wood to gain entrance into buildings. In constructing their nests, mice will destroy fabrics and leather goods, and they can cause fires by chewing through the insulation on electrical wires.

When Am I Most Likely To See A Mouse Or Rat?

Both will become active primarily during the evenings and remain so until the middle of the night. If food is scarce or the infestation is large, they will be active during daylight hours.

Where Do Rats Build Nests?

Outdoors, rats burrow into the ground. Indoors, nesting occurs in double walls, between ceilings and floors, in closed-in areas around counters, and anywhere rubbish is allowed to accumulate. Noises made by their running, gnawing, and scratching will provide clues to their actual location.

What Are The Breeding Habits Of Mice? Do They Multiply Quickly?

The average life span of both a mouse and a rat is 18 months. The mouse's young are born about 19 days after breeding and mature rapidly. A single female may have as many as 8 litters per year, averaging 5 to 6 young each. By 3 months, the young are independent and capable of reproduction.

What Are The Breeding Habits Of Rats? Do They Multiply Quickly?

The rats' young are born about 22 days after mating and mature rapidly. Single females may have as many as 6 litters per year, averaging 6 to 14 young each. By 3 months of age, the young rats are independent and capable of reproduction. If not controlled, an infestation of rats will rapidly occur.
